A few new Barbie Dolls for the Baby Boomer to purchase today!

Sunday, 17 March 2013

Don't you think that Mattel should be keeping up with aging baby boomers and come out with some dolls that we can relate to. Here are just a few ideas that I found on misc. Internet sights.

Hot Flash Barbie.
Press Barbie's bellybutton and watch her
face turn beet red while tiny drops of
perspiration appear on her forehead. Comes
with hand-held fan and tiny tissues.

Bifocals Barbie.
Comes with her own set of
blended-lens fashion frames
in six wild colors (half-frames too!), neck
chain and large-print editions of
Vogue and Martha Stewart Living.

Flabby Arms Barbie.
Hide Barbie's droopy triceps with these new,
roomier-sleeved gowns. Good news on the tummy front, too -
muumuus with tummy-support panels are included.

Bankruptcy Barbie.
Comes with foreclosure papers for the dream house, scissors to cut up her credit cards, and a threatening letter from the IRS.

Divorce Barbie.
Sells for $199.99.
Comes with Ken's house,
Ken's car and Ken's boat.

Happy Birthday Barbie!

Monday, 4 March 2013

Well, Barbie has certainly managed to stay fit and trim. On March 9th she officially turns 54. Yes Barbie is a baby boomer too. It doesn't look like she has gained any of that menopausal middle and I just have to wonder how much plastic surgery she's had.
Oh my, and such a full life. Clearly she would have been voted ' most likely to succeed', and maybe best dressed, well I'm thinking she would have come in first on just about every superlative. So glad she wasn't in my senior class... Well moving on...
Barbie, ( really, she should be going by Barbara now) has never been shy, insecure, or lacking in self confidence. Just take a look at her careers.
She has been:
Student Teacher-Cheerleader -McDonald's employee--Fashion Model-Babysitter-Nurse-Dentist-Paleontologist-Air Force Fighter Pilot-World Cup soccer competitor-American Idol contestant-Ballerina-Circus Star-Movie producer-Rock Star-Movie Star-Radio City Music Hall Rockette-Aerobics instructor-Olympic gymnast-Olympic figure skater-Professional figure skater-Tennis Star-WNBA Basketball player-Yoga instructor-Art Teacher-Spanish Language Teacher-Sign Language Teacher-Pediatrician-Veterinarian-United States Army officer-United States Navy officer-Ambassador for World Peace-Firefighter-Police Officer-Cowgirl-Chef-Flight Attendant-Mary Kay Star Consultant

In 1965 Barbie went into space, 18 years before the US selected a female to catch a ride on a space shuttle.

In 1973 Barbie advanced in the medical field from nursing to surgeon. At that time only 10% of medical Doctors were female.

Barbie ran for president in 1992. Hillary ran for president in 2008, 16 years later. Do you suspect that when Hillary played 'Barbie' her doll wore a pant suit, carried a brief case and gave up the pink beach front home for an east coast White House?

Barbie was a Nascar driver in 98, ten years before Donica Patrick won in 2008.

She also WAS President in 2000. Bases on the above ratio we can expect a women president in our next election, 2016. Who will it be, maybe Hillary, maybe Sarah, or one of the Michele's?

I don't think there is any denying that Barbie has played a role in the shaping of our generation. Like her or not, she has paved the way for many a young girl to dare to imagine that she too could be ...what so ever she wanted to be.
So this Month, let's all wish Barbie a happy birthday with wishes to continue to allow little girls to dream big.
 HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARBIE!!

March will be devoted to Barbie trivia so stay tuned.
Also, if you have been inspired by Barbie, please leave a comment and tell us how.

FAT vs MUSCLE

Monday, 18 February 2013

Take a look at this photo, 5 pounds of fat and 5 pounds of muscle do indeed weigh the same, 5 pounds.  Two people of the same height and weight can be standing next to each other. The one wears a size 8 and the other wears a size 12. So how come? It's simple, although fat and muscle weight the exact same the fat takes up way more space and it is lumpy and requires the larger dress size. Notice the picture, see how tight and firm the muscles are, this gal wears the smaller size.

Do you want a lean look of muscle or a flabby look of fat?

Maintaining good muscle mass has many many health and fitness benefits. but for today's post we're gonna stick with the obvious. Fat is big, lumpy and unhealthy for us. I'd like to challenge us all this week to do something about it. This weeks challenge is to do some form of resistance exercises for only 15 minutes a day.

An easy option is the use of a resistance band. These can be purchased fairly inexpensively, around $10.00. We can use them in the privacy of our homes, even when watching TV.

Give it a try, Your Body Will Thank You!

I mean really, who doesn't LOVE chocolate !?!?

Thursday, 7 February 2013

Valentines day is just around the corner and don't we all secretly hope that our sweetheart surprises us with a really yummy box of chocolates, or maybe just a giant solid heart, well basicially any shape will do so long as it's chocolate.

I could go all crazy here, I've been checking out internet sights about the benifits of this rich brown creamy substance and you know they're telling me that there are lots of great health reasons to eat the stuff. But before we run out to the store to stock up I have to write the caution here. These great reasons to eat chocolate only apply if...YOU DON'T CONSUME MORE THEN 7 OZ A WEEK. 7 oz, that's it. Oh wow I really was hoping for at least a candy bar a day, now I have to take that one bar and either down it all in one sitting or divide it up into 7 one oz (tiny) squares and savor it once a day, You know, this would be mighty good with my afternoon coffee break.

So here are a few reasons to choose chocolate:

* It can lower your blood pressure. Chocolate has flavanols, (flavanols is a substance in cocoa that increases the nitric oxide in your blood). They say eating one small square daily, ( 1 oz) can lower you risk of heart attack by 39%
*It can reduce your risk of stroke. A high dose of cocoa increases the blood flow around the brain.
*It is full of antioxidants which protect against cancer
* It stimulates that feeling of falling in love, it's the phenylethylamine (PEA) in the chocolate.
*It calms you down. Chocolate sends a serotonin boost to your brain, this reduces stress.
* It makes you sexy. The combination of serotonin and PEA sends dopamine into our so-called pleasure centers of the brain, thus making us feel sexy.
* It makes you smarter. It's the increase blood flow that does the trick.

The experts suggest that the best chocolates to choose are the ones with the most cocoa. Cocoa on it's own is actually bitter and chalky, hence the addition of butter and sugar. The more butter and sugar the less healthy. Look for 70% cocoa content. Here's a few to consider.

Well this Valentines Day I'll be sipping a glass of red wine
and savoring a yummy chocolate bar.

I hope you will too.
 ENJOY !

In the dim and distant past
When life's tempo wasn't so fast,
Grandma used to rock and knit,
Crochet, tat and baby sit.

When the kids were in a jam,
They could always call on Gram.
But today she's in the gym
Exercising to keep slim.

She's checking the web or surfing the net,
Sending some e-mail or placing a bet.
Nothing seems to stop or block her,
Now that Grandma's off her rocker.

11 things about myself.

I married  the paper boy 40 years ago.

I'm spending the winter in Alaska so that I can help out with our first and only, so far, grand baby

I spent the first 50 years in Washington State

I now call Prescott AZ my home

I drink decaf coffee now. Really, it's just not the same as ' a double shot breve latte'.

I'm a closet tree hugged. I still remember the day my husband chopped down a tree in our yard without consulting me.  Oh my I overreacted just a tad!

I'm on a bowling team with my son.

I love to go on nature hikes.

I could enhance any dish with a dollop of sour cream and be delighted.

I think 'the Biggest Loser' is motivating!

I was 30 when I had my first child.

Do you exercise and if so, which exercise do you prefer?
Yes, I currently do CrossFit and I love it. You get to do fun things that you forgot you could do like somersaults, bear crawls and jumping.

Do you prefer winter or summer?
I like winter and the sports that go with it, but I'd have to say I prefer Summer. I love the smells, fresh mowed lawn of example.

What has been your favorite book to read?
   King James Bible

Which type music do you listen to?
I usually listen to today's country.

If you could go back and meet your 20-year-old self, what one
piece of advice would you give her?
Don't be scared, it all works out fine.

Have you ever visited any of the National Parks? If so, which one?
I've visited several, just not sure I  can remember them all, Mt Rainier, Olympic, North Cascade, Yellowstone, Denali, Kenai Fjords, Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest, Redwood, Yosemite, Crater Lake.

Have you ever traveled outside the United States? If so, where?
Canada, Mexico,France, London, Denmark, Sweden

How do you spend your quiet time?
Usually by myself and now I'm often blogging.

What is your favorite quote?
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Which do you prefer, sunrises or sunsets?
  Sunrises

What is your favorite food? (Can you tell I’m hungry?)
Sometimes you just need a good old fashioned hamburger and fries.

I have nominated,

Here are the questions for you:
-----------
What is your favorite Starbucks drink to order?
What is the longest you lived in one place and where?
What was the shortest time spent in one place and where?
What is your proudest moment (it can't be something your kids accomplished)
If you could give me one piece of advise what would that be?
How long have you been blogging?
How many cruises have you been on and to where?
Tell us one thing that's still on your bucket list.
Who ( still living) do you admire?
If you could be granted one wish, what would that be?
What is your favorite reality show and why?

Thanks again Laurie!

Baby Boomer embarks on a new career and is chosen
to participate in season eleven of Project Runway.

After working 20 some years as a funeral director, Cindy decides to go back to school (in her 50's), attends design school and has now landed a spot on the famous reality show. Challenge One found her is the bottom 2, but she was able to pull out of it and will get another opportunity to showcase her talent next week. I look forward to Challenge Two.
With 72 million baby boomers, Cindy should be a fan favorite. I know I'm rooting for her.

Cindy Marlatt age 59

So what about you? Have you reinvented yourself after the age of 50? If you have or are in the process, I'd love to hear about it. Please leave a comment. It's never to late to go after our dreams.

TV...TV...TV...

Tuesday, 22 January 2013

I recently heard this stat. U.S. adults spend 5 hours everyday in front of the TV. Then, I heard another stat. People who spend 6 hours a day watching TV reduce their life expectancy by 5 years. Wow, that's a big number. That could be the difference between celebrating your grandchild's 13th birthday or celebrating his high school graduation.

Well last night I did sit on the couch watching the Biggest Loser all while eating a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup, ( I did feel just a tiny bit guilty) but... sometimes a good sweet and a slouch on the old couch is due. Just not everyday.

This week's baby step to better health is incorporating this slogan. Just move a little bit and you're way ahead of the couch potato. So this week, lets try some of these activities WHILE we're watching our favorite reality show.

1) Move, maybe walk on the tread mill (or your favorite exercise equipment) in front of the TV. Exercise for 10 minutes, rest for 10 and repeat
2) Grab an old hoola hoop and give it a swirl. No doubt you'll be as entertaining as what's on the tube.
3) Get up every commercial and do some crunches, sit ups etc.
4) This could be a good time to fold clothes or iron with a few squats between

Be creative. I'd love to hear your suggestions. The more choices we have the more active we'll become and the healthier we'll get.

Leave a comment to share your ideas on ways to reduce the couch potato syndrome.
Give it a try, your body will thank you.

Grow Your Blog!!!

Thursday, 17 January 2013

Hello fellow bloggers,

I’m excited to participate in this Grow Your Blog Event. I began blogging just a few short months ago. My daughter encouraged me to do so.

Her blog is: mycalmdelight.blogspot.com

Anyway at first I thought, who has time to sit around all day and read blogs, but with a little encouragement I went ahead and took the plunge. Now I get it and yes I do spend a fair amount of time ‘sitting around reading blogs’. Already it’s been a fun journey. First off I am struck by the awesome talents of so many. The photography is awe-inspiring, the crafts are impressive, and the fashion ideas are helpful. I love the retro themes, the apron themes, the antique themes. And of course I love the personal insights into your lives. I love hearing about the grand kids and the fun you have with them and I love anytime I get to take a walk down memory lane. So thank you everyone for sharing your lives and your talents.

My blog isn’t quite like any of yours, I don’t showcase a particular talent or skill and I’m not spending too much time on my day to day activities. I do however feel like I have a voice and something to say that hopefully you will enjoy and just maybe be inspired by.

My blog, fit and healthy baby boomers, is not about what size we wear or even what age we are, but rather how the foods that we choose to eat effect our bodies and our overall health. My eyes were first opened to the concept thatthe foods we eat (and the quantity in which we eat them) are killing us, when 25 years ago my Mom died from heart disease. There were no obvious signs, and she had just gotten a clean bill of health from her GP. She phoned one day to say that she had called 911 and she was in the emergency room. Well she never left the hospital and 6 weeks later after being diagnosed with heart disease, high blood pressure and undergoing bypass surgery, she passed away. I still miss her.

Soon after, I started hearing about research being done by renowned physicians. Their studies were revealing that the foods we eat are causing havoc in our bodies and by making better food choices we could prevent or reverse many diseases, including heart disease. So began my interest in the food and the amount that I put in my mouth and provide for my family. That's when I started reading labels and ingredient lists. Oh wow, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, maltodextrin, sugar, high fructose corn syrup, sodium content plus fertilizers and pesticides sprayed on our crops, oh my no wonder we’re chuck full of diseases. And then there’s the pharmaceuticals. . .

I'm passionate about this topic and hope that you will join me as we research and discuss baby steps to improve our health. I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to enjoying my grand kids in good health and for as long as the good Lord allows me to remain on this earth.

I’m happy to offer a giveaway. All you have to do to enter is simple leave a comment. In keeping with the health and fitness theme, here is the giveaway.

The winner will be announced February 8th.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you’ll decide to follow along and see where this may take us.

To your health,

Me and my honey (Ken) soon to celebrate our 40th anniversary!

Have you noticed it too?

Sunday, 13 January 2013

You know, those very small and subtle changes that continually take place and you don't really notice them until one day you wake up and the world is different. Well they say that change is good, but what happens when those changes start to cause havoc on our bodies. RED FLAG, it's time to make some adjustments.

The changes I'm speaking about are not world peace, or the political and social climate of the country, however those are definitely worth our attention, but the changes I'm talking about are those that affect us right at home.

It's SERVING SIZES!!!!!

Gradually and without realizing it our serving plates have increased in size by 30% since the 1960's. Since our eye plays tricks on us, we seem to think that the plate should be covered. I mean really, who wants to eat on a large plate with a tiny amount of food on it. I'm hungry just thinking about it.  Is it any wonder that we're packing on an extra 20 pounds, ( or more).

feeling full......................................still hungry

It doesn't take a mathematician to figure out the relationship
between obesity and serving sizes. We can all do the math.

Take a look at serving sizes then and now.

THEN                                   NOW
330 calories                                     590 calories

140 calories                350 calories

270 calories                   630 calories

500 calories             850calories

45 calories                    330 calories

What Size Do You Want To Be?

I joined in 'Live Your Dream Life Now'

Monday, 7 January 2013

Today starts the first of eight sessions to 'live your dream life now'. Sandy over at www.hobnobbers-sandy.blogspot.com, is presenting this. Already I'm stuck. Our first exercise is to list 10-20 achievements. Okay I was able to come up with about 18 so all's well here. I'm stumped at question #2 though, this one will take me a few hours, possibly days to come up with 20.
Click on over to Sandy and take a look, it should be fun and a great way to begin the new year.
Thanks Sandy.
